Our Recipe for Eco-Friendly Paint

Ecological paint.

Eco-friendly paint, the ocher-red coloring option:

Our dry toilet cabins are made from poplar wood. Its natural characteristics make it an ideal wood for this construction. It naturally repels pests without the need for treatment. It also withstands moisture very well, provided it can breathe (which is the case with our cabins).

Once your dry toilet cabin kit is assembled, it is not mandatory to paint or stain it.

But for those of you who desire a bit of color, we offer, at the time of purchase, an ocher-red colorization option.

We chose this color because it appears to be the most versatile. It blends well with nature, resembling the color of tiled roofs and brick walls. It also complies with the requests of the architects of historic buildings in France, allowing the installation of dry toilet cabins in classified villages.

If you choose to follow our recipe, you are free to experiment with other colors. For example, a sky blue color by the seaside…

Because we always strive to minimize our impact on the planet during the production of our products, we have chosen to make this ocher-red paint ourselves using natural pigments. If you wish to make it yourself, here is our “magical” recipe to create a natural and sustainable dye in less than an hour.dry toilet decorated by children

ECO-FRIENDLY PAINT

For this, you’ll need to prepare the following list of ingredients:

  • 3.5 liters of water
  • 125 grams of flour, for binding
  • 100 grams of ferrous sulfate, to prevent the growth of moss (it’s not essential and requires extreme caution during its use!!! Gloves, goggles… Keep out of reach of children and animals).
  • 400 grams of linseed oil, for nourishing the wood
  • 1 kilogram of natural ocher-red pigment, for color
  • 3 or 4 tablespoons of black soap, to facilitate emulsion between water and oil
  • Plus, an old pot and a wooden spoon!!!

Then, put on your apron and your chef’s hat, and let’s get cooking for 45 minutes!

  • To begin, bring the water to a boil.
  • In the meantime, roll up your sleeves and prepare a “pancake batter” with the flour and a little water, ensuring there are no lumps.
  • Pour this batter into the boiling water while stirring vigorously.
  • Cook for 15 minutes.
  • Then, add the ocher and ferrous sulfate,
  • Stir constantly,
  • Let it cook for another 15 minutes,
  • Add the linseed oil and black soap,
  • Stir constantly,
  • Another 15 minutes of cooking… And…
  • It’s ready, all that’s left is to apply it.

Furthermore, you can store your paint for several months without any issues, as long as you cover it and mix it well before use.
